Is there any one who feels let down by their Teeth Whitening company? We have the Smile Quest System and although it works well enough I am concerned about all the negative publicity in national press and the 'Which' magazine and feel that all the political issues should have been ironed out before selling systems to therapists. If we had known about the Dentists objections would have thought twice about spending £15,000! After all it's our repuations that are at stake not the TW companies selling machines. We have also had to change to Chlorine Dioxide as the peroxide originally used wasn't legal! I feel we should be protected more!

Hi Julie, Im in the same boat as you, however its really their profit in their pockets that dentists are trying to protect? The government have made this procedure cosmetic which when you think about the long ques and waiting list to get onto a dentist its probably helping to alleviate this problem? Ive just posted a reply on the chatterbox forum in response to a post, about dentists using illegal % of peroxide, however they can get around this by stating it is in 'thier appinion that the clients need a higher %' - so it becomes precriptive and the DGC will definately not investigate as Ive tried to forward a complaint regarding my local dentist who I get lots of grief from - he advertises up to 35% peroxide? It ironic as all the derogitory reports that Ive heard of (bar one) have been dentist related? Stick with Smilequest in my opinion they are the best company out there and one of the best of the bunch who offer teeth whitening systems?

Hi,
I completely understand where your coming from Julie, these companies have a lot to answer for. They sell the machines to people they know are not qualified to carry out these treatments, however like most compaines they are only interested in their profit margin. I work as a beauty therapist in a dental surgery and recently went to the annual showcase where they were making it clear that they are now taking a tougher stand on people other than dentist carry out this treatment. However if no one reports you then they are not likly to find you too easy. It's more a matter to weather your insurance would still cover you should something go wrong?.

Hi Amy the problem could be the peroxide strenghth that is in the product if its peroxide based. the higher the peroxide the more problems and sensitivity you may get?

There is only one thing that I know of to strip the enamel off and that is acid. High % peroxide can cause sensitivity and this is what most people complain about when they have had it done at the Dentists as they often use much higher %'s of Hydrogen Peroxide. 35% Carbamide peroxide is not the same as hydrogen peroxide although it does break down to hydrogen peroxide (lower strength - about one third less??). Chlorine Dioxide is (unfortunately an acid) an industrial cleaning agent which is LEGAL and used in teeth whitening by some companies. Due to trading standards coming down hard on therapists some companies are switching over to this. What a weird world we live in!

Hi Molly
I have replied - bit of a rant! I dont believe therapists should be victimised by a powerful lobby group such as the GDC. Dentists carry out botox and filler treatments now what next - thought they made enough money out of Dentistry? I just paid £240.00 for a tiny filling and repair to a chip on my front tooth. Had to go back TWICE to have the chip sorted as he left a "ledge" behind the tooth - very professional! lol

HI

the 35% carbamide peroxide will only be used by dentists when the patient is in the chair due to the possibility of gums being burnt and the sensititvity level.

Although you can purchase it from ebay for £5.99 for a 10cc syringe!!

Only reason i know about it is i was in at dentist for veneers to my top teeth and id been bad and smoked for a bit so thought about bleachin up the remaining teeth so they color match the new veneers and sought his advice on using it.

oh the price we pay to look good huh!? lol

Hi,
I have just watched Sky News and was so angry, I had to find a forum to share the bulletin.
Yet again, the dentists are going at it again about us in salons using their precious teeth whitening systems.
Are they frightened that we may be doing better than they are because we charge a more reasonable rate. Or are we more caring with our clients?!!!
I have changed my solution, because they caused uproar, yet they continue to use high % of peroxide. Having to disgard the peroxide I had just bought! I am fed up to the high teeth (!!!!) of it all. Not only does this laser cost me £550 a month to lease, but my salon insurance has tripled. I really wish I had never taken it on. I don't get any backing from Belle Sante. They just fob me off! If I knew a legal way of getting out, I would. Anyone had any luck and how did you do it?

How about we all report these dentists to trading standards? They do it to us and if they're breaking the law - there breaking the law. Ive even spoken to the GDC about legal limits and they obviously thought I was the general public wanting info and went onto say that over 0.1% was illegal and that I should report this company. That was until I advised them that I did teeth whitening and it was my dentist that was breaking the law using and advertising 35% hydrgen peroxide?

Mmmm, you can imagine, I was passed around a bit, with no answers, no backing and a dentist who probably isnt insured as he's using these far too high percentages - that they are basically un-insurable?

When is something going to happen about these dentist, were lying too low that there walking all over us? It must stop? But who do you turn to?

Hi Amy,

The reason your teeth are sore with teeth bleaching is that the dental tubles in the enamel are where the moisture in your teeth are. When you bleach them it dries this out and they get very sensitive, you can buy a special toothpaste called colgate 2800 from boots to help put this back and as a result they will not hurt anymore.

Hope this helps

Hi All...

Thank god there are other people out there.... we brought a system 2 years ago and have a good cliental base however we have had a visit from TS as a dentist close by reported that we used HP, bascially we were told that if they closed us down they would have to stop all the dentists carrying out the treatments in the area, three of which use the same product as oursleves. After the programme on the One Show Last night two clients called me making sure we didnt use CD, what do we do now?..

Hi all,

We use a smile spa system that does NOT use any hydrogen peroxide. We get great results using chlorine dioxide with most people going up an average 8 shades, with no complaints afterwards of excessively sore gums.

I don't understand why dentists continue to knock us for carrying out this simple procedure, when from what I understand Hydrogen Chloride is fairly dangerous when not administered correctly, even by dentists.

I know this first hand as my mother is practice manager for a surgery that used to offer teeth whitening until an incident where the a patients gums were damaged because the gum block was not fitted correctly.

We should not give in to pressure from dentists if we, and more importantly our clients are happy with what we offer.

Have to say I am not a fan of chlorine dioxide. It is basically an industrial cleaning agent and there have been complaints that after a few months the teeth end up worse than before as chlorine dioxide, I believe is acid based and this can strip the enamel off, hence the worsening. However THIS IS LEGAL!! So where is the sense in that? Check this out written by BABTAC www.babtac.com/newsfiles/Teeth%20whitening%20news.doc

What seems to be happening is that dentists are complaining to the GDC about non dentists doing whitening treatments. Which is what the GDC want so they can report high figures of compaints on TV, mags etc via their PR company they have employed to do so. However they will not provide figures of genuine public complaints (they say a handful)???
What happens when a complaint comes through, is they investigate the salon/non-dentist and if they find that they are using over 0.01%, which most do they prosecute. This has pushed non-dentists and reputable companies into finding an alternative hence the chlorine dioxide situation we have. This seems to keep the GDC happy as they then have a justification into down grading non-dentists using this chemical as they can cause problems and damage to the teeth. The GDC are obviously fighting to get this product banned, and will go on until something is done.
I have been approached by my local Trading Standards (I write for my local paper) who are more interested in recieving information about the Dentists in my area and are pushing to investigate the ILLEGAL amounts of Hydrogen Peroxide(HP)that they use as its the same for anyone teeth whitening whether dentist or not? I recommend that you look at your dentist in your area, and if they are teeth whitening you can more or less guarantee that they are using ILLEGAL strenghths of HP and you should report this to your local Trading Standards for them to deal with. They are governed by the same laws as we are too, its about time we, as professionals stand up to be counted in this situation. Rant over...

In July 2007 teeth bleaching was classed as practice of dentistry by the house of commons there for you need to be a dentist to carry out this treatment, so the type of bleach argument is pointless.

WRONG!
Is classified under EU regs as a COSMETIC PROCEDURE therefore for anyone including dentists there needs to be a MEDICAL reason for carrying out the procedure using Hydrogen peroxide levels above those stated in cosmetic regs. FACT!

really interested in all your replies.

I have been approached by a nurse who carries out Teeth White Laser Whitening.

Has anyone had any dealings with this company?

Also as a laser is used for the teeth whitening is it necessary to be Healthcare Commission registered?

Does anyone know the flowing please. Where can I get insurance cover for
teeth Whitening using Chlorine Dioxide ?
And where can I buy Chlorine Dioxide gels of the net ?

Chlorine Dioxide is a industrial cleaning material but you have to be sensible
there are different levels of chlorine Dioxide, for example Peroxide strips
hair colour so you would not fancy putting that on your teeth but we do.

Any help would be great !
